Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common anxiety disorder characterised by what is known as excessive ‘obsessions’ and ‘compulsions’. An obsession is a persistent thought that occurs repeatedly, and a compulsion is a repetitive behaviour that is caused by the obsession. Both obsessions and compulsions cause a large amount of distress for an individual, to the point of being considered excessive by an unaffected individual.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “what is OCD behaviour?”, you’re not alone. Common behaviours include hand washing, compulsive checking on something, hoarding behaviours, obsessive cleaning and consistent self doubt. The obsession/compulsion is performed as often as possible, as it provides the individual with a sense of comfort and alleviates anxiety. When the action is not performed, distress often results.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder symptoms can vary in intensity and presentation from person to person. People with OCD often find different ways of coping with the anxiety; however more often than not it involves performing the obsessive or compulsive behaviour more frequently than before. It can be very difficult to resist the urges, which in turn causes more anxiety. Overcoming these feelings is a challenge, but it is possible.
